I cared too much about how people saw me at work. No matter how good a job I do, no matter how much I go out of my way to be a genuine person and do the right thing, it’ll never be enough for them because they’ll always need a reason to justify their sexism and/or racism. As a Black woman, I lose both ways. So I have to do the right thing for myself and stop doing it to please everyone else.

Work-related anxiety can cause mortal health issues, and work-related stress can kill you.

There comes a time when Black women need to stop going out of our way to save everyone else around us at work and start thinking about ourselves. Our strength is not valued, measured, or determined by how much abuse we can take because it is literally killing us off.

And don’t depend on our men or our Generation X women in work spaces to save us or help us. They won’t. They’ll never come to our rescue. They’re also putting themselves first instead of coming together with us as a united front and being a powerful force to be reckoned with.

Fuck them all, and start taking care of ourselves. Save ourselves first. Taking care of myself first is what pushed me to continue my career until retirement. Best decision I’ve ever made. This is a solid career path with great benefits. Don’t ever let anyone or anything keep you from building a secure future.

The experiences that have affected me most are posted on my Instagram under my 10th enlistment anniversary post.

It pretty much sums up everything. If you want to know more about my experience before you decide to join, or want to talk about your experiences while you’re still in, hit me up directly and ask me anything. I’ll respond. My instagram DM and my blog are the best places to reach me.
